Cash strapped Police Scotland is spending record sums of money removing deadly asbestos from police stations according to shock new figures ‌

Since 2022 the national force has forked out more than £1 million extracting the toxic material from buildings used both by officers and the public. However the cost, revealed under Freedom of Information, has soared in the last three years from £108,456 in 2023 to £583,978 in the first nine months of this year. Overall the money spent on asbestos removal since 2022 is £1,068,131. ‌

Police chiefs have also spent almost £250,000 in the same period carrying out asbestos related repairs on buildings.. One of the worst affected areas is 'L' Division which covers Dumbarton, Clydebank, Oban and Helensburgh. More than £4
