San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said it’s “ highly unlikely ” Brock Purdy would return as the 49ers’ starting quarterback on Sunday, which means it’s highly likely Mac Jones will be under center for the first snap against the Arizona Cardinals.

Shoulder and toe injuries kept Purdy on the bench for San Francisco’s second game of the season, and Jones took the reins of the offense in a 26-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Purdy practiced daily in preparation for the game against Arizona, but he was a limited participation and is designated as “ questionable ” for the 49ers’ Week 3 contest.

Purdy made “ a lot of progress ” during the week, Shanahan said.
