A famous Erie-born artist will be honored with a state historical marker in his hometown.

The marker honoring Richard Anuszkiewicz is among 45 new historical signs approved by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission on Sept. 18.

Other new markers will honor the industrial innovation of Northampton County's Crayola Crayon and Pittsburgh baseball's "Great One," Roberto Clemente.

About the artist

Born in 1930, Anuszkiewicz grew up on the city's east side and studied with Erie artist and teacher Joseph Plavcan and later with German-born artist Josef Albers.

He pioneered the use of color, light and geometric forms in the 1950s, Erie preservation planner Matthew Falcone wrote in his application for the historical marker.
