Owning a home on Staten Island has gotten significantly more expensive over the past decade, with nearly half of all borough residents with a mortgage seeing monthly homeownership costs of $3,000 or more, new data shows.

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau released its American Community Survey 2024 1-year-estimates, with data showing that the median monthly owner costs for Staten Island homeowners with a mortgage was $2,934 last year.

The $2,934 in median monthly ownership costs on Staten Island was roughly 44% higher than the national median ownership costs of $2,035.

In total, there were 73,865 owner-occupied housing units with a mortgage on Staten Island, with 35,176 of them, or 47.6%, paying more than $3,000 each month in owner costs, which include mortgage payments, insurance, taxes
