LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Brian Hernandez Jr., the jockey who won the Kentucky Oaks and Derby in 2024, was seriously injured after a fall at Churchill Downs over the weekend.
Hernandez was riding in the third race Sunday when his colt got hurt and threw him off.
According to his wife, Hernandez is in the hospital with seven broken ribs, a punctured lung, lacerated liver, and bleeding that is being monitored by doctors.
"Jockey life isn't for the faint of heart," Jamie Hernandez wrote in a post on Facebook. "Physically and mentally draining. Hug your loved ones tight. Please say extra prayers for Brian tonight."
In an update Monday afternoon, Tom Drury Racing said Hernandez was in "good spirits" and will be having surgery Tuesday to stabilize his fractured ribs
