Multiple British charities have cut ties with Sarah, the Duchess of York, following the revelation of her email correspondence with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Duchess, who is the former wife of Prince Andrew, has been removed as a patron from several organizations, including Julia's House, Natasha's Allergy Research Foundation, the Children's Literacy Charity, and Prevent Breast Cancer.
Reports surfaced over the weekend detailing a 2011 letter in which Ferguson referred to Epstein as her "supreme friend" and described him as a "steadfast, generous and supreme friend." In the email, she mentioned that she had been advised to conduct a critical interview about Epstein to protect her career as a children's book author and philanthropist. In that interview, she stated she would "never have anything to do with" Epstein again and labeled a £15,000 ($30,000) loan from him as a "gigantic error of judgement."
Julia's House announced its decision to discontinue her patronage, stating, "following the information shared this weekend on the Duchess of York's correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, it would be inappropriate for her to continue as a patron of the charity." The charity expressed gratitude for her past support.
Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse, founders of the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, also expressed their disturbance over the correspondence and ended her patronage. They noted, "Sarah Ferguson has not been actively involved with the charity for some years. In light of the recent revelations, we have taken the decision that it would be inappropriate for her to continue to be associated with the charity."
The Children's Literacy Charity echoed these sentiments, stating it was "inappropriate" for the Duchess to remain a patron and requested her resignation.
Epstein, who was a convicted sex offender, died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. The Duchess of York, who married Prince Andrew in 1986 and divorced a decade later, has since redefined her public persona as an author and media figure. She has maintained a close relationship with Andrew, who is the brother of King Charles III, and they continue to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park.
Following the reports about her email, a spokesperson for Ferguson stated that the message was sent "in the context of advice the duchess was given to try to assuage Epstein and his threats." Reports indicated that Epstein had been contemplating a defamation lawsuit against her due to the interview.
Epstein's connections continue to attract attention, with recent calls for the release of Department of Justice documents related to his case. Additionally, the UK's ambassador to the US was dismissed after new revelations about his ties to Epstein.
