PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley signed an executive order Monday morning aimed at improving the city’s public safety.

The order, entitled “A Safe Providence for All,” is aimed at reaffirming public trust in the Providence Police Department, and clarifying that Providence police will not conceal their identities or act as immigration officials.

Smiley lambasted federal policies, saying that they made families and Providence community members feel less safe.

To underscore that, Smiley said that providence police does not “proactively collaborate” with ICE.

Smiley said that it is particularly important in this political climate for the City of Providence and its elected officials to stand up for marginalized groups and to welcome them into the city.
