PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Amid ongoing controversy, Mayor Brett Smiley said Monday that a new executive order should make it clear: Providence police officers are not immigration officers.
In his second executive order of the year, Smiley reaffirmed that the city is meant to be a "safe and welcoming place for all," and that Providence police are not allowed to assist federal immigration authorities.
"While it is true that federal agencies may operate in our city, we will not and do not proactively collaborate with ICE or other federal immigration enforcement," Smiley said during a press conference on Monday.
The executive order -- titled "A Safe Providence for All" -- stated that police will always wear body-worn cameras; will clearly identify which agency they're coming from; will pro
