It’s not uncommon for the FBI to advise victims of online scams to contact the agency for help through its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). However, a recent scam now has the FBI advising victims to make sure they’re using the correct version of the IC3.

In a warning issued Friday, the FBI says predators have begun creating fake versions of the actual government website in hopes of scamming users further.

“Threat actors create spoofed websites often by slightly altering characteristics of legitimate website domains, with the purpose of gathering personally identifiable information entered by a user into the site, including name, home address, phone number, email address, and banking information," says the warning.
