STORRS, Conn. — UConn senior forward Chioma Okafor may call Storrs home right now, but her roots trace all the way back to Africa.
Okafor, a Nigerian-Malawian, was born in Africa where she learned to play soccer. The sport eventually brought her to the United States.
A few months ago, Okafor earned a roster spot on the Nigerian women's national soccer team, a squad that went on to capture a historic 10th Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
"It was so surreal to me because I was like looking at the history of the Nigerian national team. It was like, there's no way I'm gonna be a part of that as well," she said.
Okafor noted her excitement in joining the roster for the ACON competition and to be in the conversation for the Nigerian women national team going forward.
