Police in Nanaimo are warning to the public about an attempted wedding-planning scam.

In a case reported to police, the complainant, who has been licensed to perform wedding ceremonies for many years, received an e-mail from a potential client asking them to officiate over their wedding. The officiant did not like the tone of the e-mail and did not accept the offer.

Even though the request was rejected, the scammer, who went by the name of Linda Joe, continued e-mailing the officiant and several days later sent a cheque for $2,900. According to police, the scammer said the money was in order for the officiant to pay for a photographer and, if there were any funds left over, to send the remainder back.
