A Pearl River man who threw his 83-year-old mother the ground during an argument over money for cigarettes has been convicted of second-offense domestic abuse battery, St. Tammany Parish authorities said.
Because Clifford Roberts, 57, has a history of criminal convictions, the northshore District Attorney's Office will seek to have him sentenced as a multiple offender, which could mean more time in jail than the one-year sentence his conviction carries per state statute, a District Attorney's Office spokesperson said Monday.
Testimony at Roberts's trial last week showed that he became angry with his mother after he asked her for money to purchase cigarettes and she gave him $10, telling him it was all she had, the DA's office said in a news release.
