MARSHFIELD − Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield has welcomed three young female aoudads, also known as Barbary sheep, to its facility.

The aoudads − named Rainer, Cascade and Acadia − arrived from a USDA-accredited partner facility and are currently acclimating to their new environment, according to a community announcement.

Aoudads are native to the mountains of North Africa but have been introduced to parts of the southwestern United States. They are known for their adaptability to steep and rocky terrain.

Aoudads are notable for their striking appearance; their coats are tan to reddish-brown with lighter underbellies, a shaggy mane on their chest and throat, and large, backward-curving horns. They can stand about 2.5-3.5 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 100 and 300 pounds.
