U.S. Steel will resume processing steel slabs at Granite City Works in Illinois after the White House said it had overruled the steelmaker's decision to cease the work, citing the national security agreement reached this year that allowed the company to merge with Nippon Steel.

“The administration did intervene to block U.S. Steel’s decision to idle the Granite City Works plant, with the threat of the president invoking his golden share authority,” the White House said in a statement.

Nippon Steel agreed to give the president a "golden share" that would give him say over employment, investment, production and other matters, before allowing Nippon Steel’s $14.9 billion purchase of U.S. Steel to go through.
