Maine (WABI) - One hiker on the Appalachian Trail set a record this September.

80-year-old Betty Kellenberger of Michigan made it to Katahdin’s summit on September 12th becoming the oldest woman to do so by six years.

She says it’s not her first time attempting the feat after first learning about it in school.

She says she’s spent far more time on bikes than hikes since then, but after the pandemic, she wondered how much time she had left to attempt the trail.

Her first journey was cut short due to Lyme disease and severe hydration in 2022, and again in 2023 when she fell off a mountain while also losing her mentor and friend.

Motivated to complete the trail in his honor, she tried again in 2024 but was stopped short in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
