SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

The nonprofit that manages the Sacramento Zoo announced plans Monday to expand the zoo at its Land Park site and at a location across the street that used to hold pony rides.

The Sacramento Zoological Society said it submitted a request to the city for the 1.4-acre parcel on the northern boundary of the existing zoo, and a 4.4-acre parcel across the street on Land Park Drive that has been vacant.

The two sites would bring the total size of the zoo to 20.1 acres, representing a 40% increase, and the largest expansion of the zoo since the 1960s, the Sacramento Zoological Society said.
