Councillors have unanimously backed a masterplan drawn up to extend and increase capacity at a town cemetery - noting "doing nothing is not an option." It comes after a report outlined initial proposals for the future of Stranton Cemetery and Crematorium, which has "reached a critical point in its lifespan."
The latest meeting of Hartlepool Borough Council's adult and community based services committee on Thursday (September 18) heard work is required to multiple elements of the site "to ensure it can continue to be used." Officers noted burial capacity is a "particularly pressing issue."
Initial proposals have therefore been brought forward to extend the 30-acre Stranton Cemetery to the west of the existing site, onto the former allotments. The current estimated cost would be £1.25 mi
