MOLOKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Public guided tours at Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai have resumed after a three-year hiatus.
Starting Sept. 24, visitors can once again travel to one of Hawaii’s most historic and sacred places through Kalaupapa Saints Tours.
Tours are operated by Seawind Tours & Travel , who says they are keeping groups very small to respect the remaining patient-residents who still live there.
This special place is where more than 8,000 people, most of whom were Native Hawaiian, lived and died after being diagnosed with Hansen’s disease.
The “Saints Tour” takes visitors through patient cottages, cemeteries, and St. Philomena Church.
Tour guides tell the stories of Father Damien, Mother Marianne, and the people who built their lives there in isolation.
