An MBTA Transit Police sergeant who was convicted of trying to “cover up” a fellow officer assault on a man has been sentenced by the feds.

David Finnerty, 49, was found guilty of aiding and abetting the filing of a false arrest report in connection with another Transit Police officer’s beating of a homeless man at the Ashmont T station.

Finnerty was sentenced on Monday in federal court to two years’ probation, with a special condition that he complete 150 hours of community service, and he was ordered to pay a $500 fine. The U.S. Attorney’s office had recommended a sentence of two years in prison.
