Some days Kim Franks is in so much pain that she can't get out of bed.
The Port Stephens resident suffers from debilitating psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by rashes, sores, blisters, as well as swelling and joint pain.
But knitting has been an outlet for Ms Franks to pass the time — all while helping others.
For years, Ms Franks has been knitting items for premature babies receiving treatment in the John Hunter Children's Hospital's (JHCH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
"I do blankets, wraps, beanies, booties and the trauma teddies," she said.
"It keeps my mind active, keeps your hands busy.
" And it takes away from you thinking about yourself and you just start thinking about how you're helping others. "
