MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Shelby County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Monday night to align the Memphis-Shelby County school board election with their own in 2026.

Seven commissioners voted for the resolution, and five voted against it.

Megan Smith with the County Attorney's Office said that school board members who were elected in 2024 will serve two years and run again in 2026.

The decision will cut five school board members' terms, including those who voted in support of firing former MSCS Superintendent Marie Feagin, except for one. All board members will be up for reelection in 2026.

Back in May, TN House Bill 1383 was signed into law, authorizing that elections for Tennessee school boards be held at the same time as county commission elections.
