ILLINOIS ( 25News Now ) - A state government program is expanding to address a shortage of civil engineers and to help get infrastructure projects done.

It’s called the Civil Engineer Intern to Hire Program, an initiative out of the Illinois Department of Central Management Services. The agency is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation to produce long-term jobs for college graduates.

At $22.09 per hour, any student graduating with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university or college can apply for the paid internship with IDOT.

An IDOT spokeswoman said with an unprecedented number of statewide projects, programs like this will help make those projects possible while creating more jobs for young engineers.
