COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - As the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding approaches, WIS is exploring more of South Carolina’s history.
Off the Palmetto Trail, a forgotten town that no longer exists can be found in Fairfield County.
At the Alston trailhead, a marker can be found detailing the history of the small village of Alston.
The thriving small town once had a post office, train station and downtown area before the Broad River overspilled its banks in the early 1900s, completely wiping the town out.
On the trail, there is a flood gauge showing how high the river can get. Its levels also rose significantly during Hurricane Helene.
Today, all that remains of the town of Alston is a small wooded area and a plaque giving a stark reminder of the power of Mother Nature’s fury.
