Viviana Surma wanted Wyandotte City Councilman Todd Hanna to know that in many ways, she is just like him.
She is a Republican, and she is Catholic. But she is also the mother of a transgender child.
"I fear for my child's life," Surma said, standing at the podium in front of the City Council on Monday night. "My child is my child. It's not what he is that I love, it's who he is."
Surma was one of a several people to speak out at the council meeting against comments Hanna made on his personal Facebook page last week in the wake of the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's talk show on ABC.
"When you outright lie to your audience and try to portray your parties (sic) agenda, and not the facts, this type of punishment is justified!"
