MARION, Iowa (KCRG) - New housing could soon fill a vacant area in Uptown Marion.

The Marion City Council approved a contractor to build a mixed-use building on the plot of land where the former library once stood. The project has been years in the making since the former library was heavily damaged during the derecho.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $21 million and will include 60 apartments, with retail space located on the ground level.

“Community, and businesses, and culture and entertainment, all those things that people can walk out their door and have all that available to them within a short walking distance,” said Mayor Nick Abouassaly.
