JEROME COUNTY, Idaho — A food pantry that has grown from serving 30 people weekly to more than 600 families monthly is seeking to relocate to county fairgrounds property, sparking opposition from fair officials who cite parking concerns and mission conflicts.
Martha and Mary's Food Pantry has operated from a home that belongs to St. Jerome Catholic Church property for nearly 14 years in what was supposed to be a temporary arrangement. Assistant Coordinator, Jeff Schroeder, said the pantry has drastically outgrown its current space while becoming Jerome 's only food pantry.
The pantry and nonprofit operate entirely through volunteers and donations. Schroeder said they have about 30 volunteers regularly but see close to 160 volunteers a year who help out at different times.
