In an age when so many natural phenomena can be explained by science, it's almost a pleasure to find one that cannot. By that measure, it's almost sad that the mystery of Death Valley's "sailing" rocks was solved in 2014.
The rocks are known to exhibit baffling behaviour.
They "slide" across the valley floor, leaving long tracks.
Since the late 1960s, these rocks have been extensively studied, with one researcher started giving them names.
He observed that they could travel significant distances. The rock he named Mary Ann moved 65 metres in a single winter. Another stone was also the smallest. Nancy's track measured a total of 260 metres.
Weighing up to 320 kilograms, some of these rocks were no mere pebbles.
Unexplained moving rocks are naturally fertile ground for speculation.
