BROOK PARK, Ohio -- City Council has unanimously approved new rules for electric bicycles, finalizing legislation aimed at improving safety and aligning city codes with state law.
The ordinance -- introduced earlier this month by Councilman Tom Dufour, Ward 2 Councilman Jimmy Mencini and Ward 4 Councilman Richard Scott -- brings e-bikes into the city’s bicycle regulations for the first time.
It establishes definitions for Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes, spells out where they can be used and creates helmet requirements for riders younger than 18 and for anyone operating higher-powered models.
Ahead of the Sept. 16 vote, Mayor Ed Orcutt said the measure was overdue and emphasized that it would pair enforcement with education.
