The Walker County Board of Commissioners lowered the county's millage rate at their September meeting.

The new rate is 5.151 mills for residents who own property in unincorporated areas, and 6.645 mills for those who own property in incorporated cities.

Unincorporated areas will see a 3.33% reduction from last year, and incorporated areas will see a nearly 5.5% reduction from last year.

The board of commissioners says the new millage rate for a home with a fair market value of $250,000 will result in a property tax reduction of $17.34 in unincorporated areas. For a home of the same value in a city, owners will save about $37.44 annually in county maintenance and operation taxes, the board explained.
