A couple hundred people came together for a common purpose on Saturday at the West Valley High School Track. The group was solemn, yet hopeful, as they prepared to participate in the annual Out of Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention.

This was the 12th year for the walk, sponsored by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, but dedicated to Betty Starr-Page, the woman who launched the walk 12 years ago at the age of 79.

Current director Morgan Zaverl Clay shared this poignant story after sadly announcing Betty’s recent death.

“She was a force to be reckoned with,” Clay said. “She had lost her son to suicide years before. Scott was a Navy man and she knew in her heart of hearts that something had to be said and done about the loss of life every year, of our military members.”
