FLINT, MI -- Ten months after they cast their first ballots to elect a new president for 2025, the Flint City Council has accomplished its mission.

Council members elected incumbent President Ladel Lewis during their meeting on Monday, Sept. 22 -- their 735th attempt to fill the position.

Since the rounds of voting started, the council had been deadlocked 4-4 over the selection, but 3rd Ward Councilwoman LaShawn Johnson, who was elected just last month to a partial term, provided the decisive fifth vote Lewis needed on Monday.

“I heard someone speak and say the residents don’t like me. I don’t think that’s true,” Lewis said after the 5-4 vote to elect her. “I’m happy to report (that) after several recall attempts, I am still here.
