Five major changes to Universal Credit are to be implemented by the Department for Work and Pensions next spring.

The Universal Credit Act 2025 received Royal Assent on September 3 after passing through all stages in the House of Commons and House of Lords.

The legislation was renamed to remove Personal Independence Payment from the title when proposals to restrict eligibility for the disability benefit were shelved following an outcry from backbenchers and campaigners.
