NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Four inmates at the Newport News Jail overdosed on an unknown substance on September 11 and were hospitalized, the Newport News Sheriff's Office confirmed.

"Thankfully, because of the heroic acts of our deputies and medical staff, all four inmates returned to the jail safely," a spokesperson said.

The sheriff’s office said there is now one arrest connected to the case. Preliminary findings suggest the source of the drugs may be a contract kitchen worker. Some forensic evidence is still pending, and further interviews are ongoing.

The investigation into the incident remains active.
