Former state Sen. Nicole Mitchell will spend several months in jail, rather than in prison or a workhouse, following her felony burglary conviction.

Mitchell was sentenced Tuesday in Detroit Lakes to six months in jail, the mandatory minimum sentence.

Becker County Judge Michael Fritz gave approval for the former DFL senator from Woodbury to serve her sentence in Ramsey County so she can participate in work release. Mitchell will be incarcerated for about four months instead of six, since Minnesota law allows defendants to serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison and the other third on supervised release.

"I don't think there is anything I can say or do that will ever be big enough to repair the harm that I've done," Mitchell said during the hearing, per MPR News.
