DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Former State Senator Michelle Mitchell will find out Tuesday morning if she will serve jail time when she is sentenced for burglarizing her stepmother's home in April of 2024.

Mitchell was convicted in July on two felony counts related to the incident, which led the Woodbury Democrat to resign her post. Jurors in Becker County did not buy Mitchell's story that she entered her stepmother's home in Detroit Lakes early the morning of April 22 to check on her, as she was struggling with dementia. The defense had a steep hill to climb during the trial, as police body cameras documenting Mitchell's arrest capture her dressed all in black and telling officers she was at the home to retrieve sentimental items that belonged to her late father.
