LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - They’re called kissing bugs – and while their name sounds harmless, experts say these insects can carry a parasite that leads to potentially deadly illnesses.
The CDC issued a warning earlier last month after new cases of Chagas disease were reported in the U.S.
Kissing Bugs have been confirmed across Virginia, including right here in Central and in Northern parts of the state.
They bite at night usually around the mouth or eyes and while most bites are harmless, some can transmit a parasite that causes Chagas disease.
“The bugs can get into a house and then they can bite someone while they’re asleep… and so when that insect bite itches, you itch the bite, then you might rub your eye or something you inoculate yourself with that parasite," said Bill Petri, Prof
