Paracetamol is a common painkiller in the UK but people may have been left confused after US President Donald Trump suggested use of the drug by pregnant women could be linked to autism in their children. ‌

However, expectant mothers are being told there is a "strong evidence base" that the medication is safe to use despite Trump's claims . ‌

The Republican leader said there had been a "meteoric rise" in cases of autism and suggested that Tylenol, which is known in the UK as paracetamol , was a potential cause. ‌

He said the medication should not be taken during pregnancy, suggesting instead that pregnant women should "tough it out". His comments have come under fire from autism campaigns and scientists this side of the Atlantic.
