HOUSTON (KIAH) — The Houston Texans have let go of one of their key acquisitions in safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was reportedly released after the first three games of the season.
NFL Media said that Gardner-Johnson was released by the team on Tuesday, a couple of days after Houston fell to 0-3 on the season in a 17-10 loss to Jacksonville.
Gardner-Johnson came to the Texans in a trade with Philadelphia for offensive lineman Kenyon Green.
In the first three games of the season, Gardner-Johnson was fourth on the team in tackles with 15, 11 of them were solo tackles. He played in over 96% of the team’s defensive snaps.
The loss of Gardner-Johnson means that M.J. Stewart will now have to step into the starting safety position as the Texans prepare to face Tennessee on Sunday.
