Retired Major-General Steve Jobson recalls flying a Black Hawk helicopter through the lower Hindu Kush mountains after an enormous earthquake struck Pakistan two decades ago.

"We'd rise up to about 10,000 feet, but we'd still be looking up at the mountains on either side of us as we flew through these unbelievable valleys," the former army pilot said .

"The Black Hawk had the power and the systems to ensure we could safely fly in those conditions and provide humanitarian assistance to the Pakistani citizens."

Major-General Jobson, who retired this year after 36 years serving in the Australian Defence Force , described the feeling of flying as incredible, noting that while the aircraft is very difficult to learn, its systems and automation make it easy to operate.
