Just before 4 p.m. Monday, members of the Westport Wildcats varsity field hockey team took to the middle high school field for a matchup with Joseph Case. The turf was thick and lush, freshly mowed and well-marked with chalk lines.

The Wildcats prevailed 1-0 in a victory not just for the players but also for the field itself, which prior to Monday had not been used this year and indeed, was completely closed to play the first two years after the building opened in September 2021.

Before workers in the facilities and maintenance department attempted to address the field’s playing conditions over the summer, and then worked with a contractor to top dress, re-seed and help officials deal with irrigation issues, it was riddled with divots, patchy bare areas caused not just by t
