The Osage Nation Historic Preservation Office has announced the full reacquisition of Sugarloaf Mound, the last remaining Native American mound in St. Louis and the city's oldest known human-made structure.
The sacred site was built between A.D. 600 and 1200, during a time when the Osage people inhabited what is now Missouri. While hundreds of mounds once existed across the region, earning St. Louis the nickname “Mound City,” Sugarloaf is the only one still standing.
A Long Journey to Reacquisition
The Osage Nation began efforts to reclaim Sugarloaf Mound in 2008 with the purchase of one-third of the property. In 2009, the Nation also acquired a house that had been constructed at the summit in 1928. That house was later demolished in 2017.
