JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Duval County inmate has died after complications with pre-existing health conditions, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police say that the inmate, Michael Lavon Barfield, 37, had initially been arrested and sent to the pre-trial detention facility on Thursday, Sept. 4.
After several days, police said Barfield was taken from the jail to a local hospital after "complaints to medical staff in reference to an existing health condition." He remained admitted until he died on Sunday, Sept. 21.
JSO said they are working with partners from the medical examiner's office to investigate Barfield's death.
According to his arrest report, Barfield was arrested for drug-related charges, including armed trafficking of fentanyl.
