LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Speaking before state lawmakers Tuesday, Warren County Public School leaders spoke about the ways they’ve approached teaching a growing number of students who are English learners. They also are requesting a new approach to measuring their educational progress.
The district currently has over 5,000 multilingual students, who are now getting an education in a new country in a new language.
District leaders asked if these students could be given more time to become proficient in English before they are tested on it.
“So when we get a student, they get one year of exemption for the state assessment, and then after that they are expected to perform at the same level of students who have been here multiple years and speak English,” said WCPS assistant superintendent Sarah J
