Houston Mayor John Whitmire said there is no evidence of a serial killer operating in Houston, shutting down a conspiracy theory propagated on social media, in the wake of multiple dead bodies being pulled from local bayous in the last week.
"There is no evidence that there is a serial killer loose on the streets in Houston, Texas," Whitmire said in a Tuesday afternoon press conference. "If there was, you would hear it from me first."
Whitmire’s comments on Tuesday, which he made standing alongside members of the Houston Police Department, including Chief J. Noe Diaz, Jr., refuted social media speculation surrounding the deaths. He attributed the speculation to sensationalism.
