DES MOINES, Iowa —

A baby boy born earlier this month is now in the care of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of the Safe Haven Act.

The law, initially implemented more than 20 years ago and expanded in 2023, allows for parents to surrender their infants if they believe they cannot care for the child. This is the fourth infant safely surrendered in 2025 , according to HHS.

The baby surrendered this month was born Sept. 8. He will be placed with a foster family until permanent placement can be determined, according to HHS.

In total, 78 infants have been surrendered under the Safe Haven Act.
