Whiting sports took center stage at Monday's school board meeting.

The board approved the hirings of new Oilers boys basketball coach Geoffrey Dan and new baseball coach Erick Chavarria.

Dan, a lifelong Northwest Indiana resident, has more than 30 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level, according to Whiting's press release.

Dan has coached at Wheeler, South Central, North Judson-San Pierre, Highland and Calumet College of St. Joseph. In his time as an assistant at Wheeler, Dan helped the Bearcats to the 2010 Class 2A state title.

The Oilers are seeking a turnaround after a winless, 0-24, season last winter.
