TEWKSBURY, Mass. —

A Massachusetts police department's therapy dog was killed in a two-car head-on crash in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, on Tuesday.

The crash happened at about 8 a.m. on Whipple Road near Wells Drive involving a Toyota Camry and a Mazda 3. Both drivers were taken to local hospitals by ambulance, with injuries that did not immediately appear to be life-threatening.

A Wilmington police therapy dog named Zena was seriously injured in the crash.

Zena was taken by ambulance to the Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence under provisions of Nero’s Law , which permits police dogs to be taken by ambulance when necessary.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the Mazda 3, driven by a 26-year-old Westminster woman, crossed over the double yellow center line and struck the Toyota
