Finance Minister Brenda Bailey told local politicians at their annual convention on Tuesday there is little new money available for their priorities and that the province faces a long, hard road to balancing the budget.

Several Metro Vancouver mayors said before her speech that even if there is little money coming from the province, they hoped the province could at least offer them some tools to address challenges around housing, infrastructure and high rent increases for local businesses, and provide reassurance that the government has a plan for addressing the current record deficit.

B.C. is projected to run a deficit of $11.6 billion this fiscal year and $12.6 billion in 2026-27 due to lowered revenues, U.S. tariffs, and an explosion in spending over the past three years.
