SPENCER COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) -- U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind) toured the Corn Island Shipyard in Spencer County in hopes to invest more into shipyards.

The facility, based on the Ohio River near Grandview, makes custom barges. Young aims to revitalize ship building operations, saying his “Shipbuilding and Harbor Infrastructure for Prosperity and Security (SHIPS) for America Act” will invest in shipyard workers to assist in building vessels and obtaining electrical and welding skills.

The act, introduced earlier this year by Young and Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), aims to be comprehensive legislation to revitalize the United States shipbuilding and commercial maritime industries. Young says this could mean America would no longer have to rely on other countries to ship things in and out
