PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Peoria City Council voted to buy the foreclosed Exposition Gardens property during its meeting on Tuesday.

The council approved the additional cost of $875,000 to buy the property from Morton Community Bank. The vote passed 8-2, with council members Alex Carmona and Denis C. Cyr voting against it.

In June, the council approved the purchase of Expo Gardens for more than $1.1 million. This should have prevented the land from going into foreclosure but the Expo Board failed to meet to consider or approve the sale and purchase agreement.

The city is preparing to spend up to $2 million at the Foreclosure Sheriff's Sale on Sept. 24. That money will be reimbursed to the city through a state grant for land banks.
